Call for Submissions - Sustainapalooza IV: Climate Chaos, A Crisis in Health
Sustainapalooza is an annual event for young people engaged in efforts to facilitate enhanced urban resiliency and sustainability. This year, Sustainapalooza will take place on Saturday, April 15th as we think about the theme of health–personal, ecological, and social. We are currently in the process of organizing workshops, guest panelists, speakers and gathering submissions of student projects. The current system consolidates power in the hands of profit-seeking industries, posing a threat to the health and security of people everywhere. The marginalized and disenfranchised are the first to feel the effects of ecological degradation while the privileged who reap the benefits of extractive industries evade these consequences. There is a community of more than 60,000 who are homeless in New York City. In the neighborhood around Hunt’s Point––the food distribution hub of NYC––rates of asthma hospitalizations are three times higher than the city average. Temperatures in New York City are projected to rise by an average of 7 degrees Fahrenheit by 2080, and the number of heat waves to triple. The health of our oceans, our lands, and our people has been sacrificed to the greed of far too few.Are you a student or young alumnus working on a project concerned with urban sustainability, resiliency, or justice?Submit your project on sustainapalooza.net by April 1st for consideration for an opportunity to present at the event on April 15th. Selected presenters will be notified by April 5th. Conference attendees will vote on the distribution of $1500 of seed money to presented projects.
