Text As Data Workshop

  • Tishman Environment and Design Center, The New School (map)
  • Google Calendar ICS

Join us for a hands-on workshop introducing the possibilities of using text as data to deepen and expand qualitative research in the environment and climate space. Workshop participants will learn how to strategically leverage diverse data sources, e.g., news articles, interviews, reports, scraped websites, and social media. We will engage with accessible computational methods such as topic modeling, sentiment analysis, machine learning stance classification, and named entity recognition.

Whether you are new to computational text analysis or looking to integrate these tools into your projects, this workshop will offer a supportive, exploratory environment. No technical background required. Open to the entire TNS community. RSVP required due to limited space in the room.

This workshop is led by Charlotte Sophia Bez, feel free to contact Charlotte with any questions at,  bezc@newschool.edu

Presented by the Tishman Environment and Design Center at The New School.

Who Does Mapping Serve? GIS in Environmental Justice and Climate Change Research, Organizing and Action

What role can mapping play, especially in times of crisis? Who does it serve, and how can researchers, organizers and designers leverage mapping to advocate for equity and justice? As policy makers, planners, and advocates increasingly rely on spatial data and geospatial techniques to advance decision making, key questions surrounding equitable representation, ethical use, and access to needed resources remain a crucial challenge.

ELIMINATING THE EFFECTS OF RACISM ON OUR WORK TO SUSTAIN ALL LIFE

  • 65 W 11th Street, Wollman Hall New York, NY 10011 USA (map)
  • Google Calendar ICS

Racism has had a deeply damaging and divisive effect on everyone. It shapes and perpetuates the inequities of our society. It has become part of our social institutions. Unless we address racism, it is replicated in any solutions we develop. Understanding and healing the effects of racism on us as individuals is a necessary step in creating a movement that can sustain all life and restore the environment. In this workshop, we will:

★ Learn about the development and maintenance of racism, ★ Examine the effects of historic and systemic racism on

individual lives, interpersonal connections, relationships, and the climate movement, ★ Examine manifestations of racism in the environmental

movement and the global response to the climate emergency, ★ Learn the approaches used by Sustaining All Life and United

to End Racism to heal from the damage of oppression, increase our effectiveness in the climate justice movement, and prevent burnout.
